Vocab Building Mantra.....an excerpt of excellence from PG !!

English is not a subject that you can gulp down in one go. Language skills cannot be built overnight, nor can the nuances of a language be downloaded into your mind inside packed classroom sessions. Here is a better way to progressively get better at English.

1. Vocabulary

(i) Check out their Homepage everyday. It is bound to add new words to your vocabulary.
(ii) Enroll for the Word of the Day newsletter. This will push words into your email Inbox everyday and force you to learn one new word and its usage everyday.
(iii) Whenever you come across a new word,  punch it into the site. Look at all the meanings of the word. Their collection of phrasal verbs is among the best. The CAT expects you to know multiple meanings of words. For example, if I punch in ‘home’, this is what I get: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/home. You now know the different ways the word ‘home’ could be used and you thought you knew the meaning of the word perfectly well.
(iv) Follow the website’s accounts on Twitter and Facebook for more updates.

b) http://dictionary.reference.com/: This gives you both a dictionary and a thesaurus to build your vocabulary with.
(i) Enroll for their ‘word of the day’.
(ii) Test yourself using some of the fun tests which are also useful at the same time. For example the day I wrote this article, the homepage had a test on the types of ‘Phobias’ — something that appears regularly in the FMS test.
(iii) Use the thesaurus feature to learn new words. Say, you come across the word ‘bedlam’. When you check out the thesaurus it shows that the word ‘bedlam’ is close in meaning to: ‘chaos’, ‘clamor’, ‘commotion’, ‘confusion’, ‘din’, ‘disquiet’, ‘disquietude’, ‘furor’, ‘hubbub’, ‘madhouse’, ‘maelstrom’, ‘noise’, ‘pandemonium’, ‘racket’, ‘shambles’, ‘tumult’, ‘turmoil’ and ‘uproar ‘. Our brains are so structured that we visualize words in groups. Now if you come across the word ‘racket’ somewhere, you will immediately relate it to ‘bedlam’!

(c) http://www.alphadictionary.com/goodword/today: A good dictionary for origins of words. Enroll for the ‘What’s the Good Word‘ emailer. For example, this is what it has to say about the word ‘Yankee’: “A British officer in 1789 suggested that Yankee comes from the Cherokee word eankhe, which means ‘slave’, ‘coward’. It might just as well come from a Native American pronunciation of English, ‘yengees’, which later became Yankees. Yankee could have been withdrawn from this word by back derivation. Most probably, however, it comes from Dutch nickname for Jan (John): Janke, where the Dutch ‘J’ is pronounced [y].”

d) Visit http://vocabmagik.com/. A good way to learn new words. I once spotted cartoon of a drunk Mr Bacchhan used to explain the word ‘bacchanalian’ (a drunken person) on this site.

2. Reading and Comprehension

a) Go to www.wikipedia.org. Go to the ‘featured content’ section and further to featured articles. You will find articles segregated by topic. Pick any random topic which you have absolutely no clue about, a different one each day (Architecture, Art, Chemistry, Economics), especially subjects you have never heard of and read the articles under that topic. This will increase the range of your vocabulary and get you up to speed for rapidly scanning unfamiliar topics.
b) CAT reading passages have in the past been picked up from The Guardian newspaper. Browse it daily. That is the kind of vocabulary level expected of you. Sign up for their free newsletters so that you keep getting emails and links from them. I also recommend The New York Times and The Times of India
c) Visit Google Scholar. Type in any keyword, say ‘mortgage’. It will throw up research papers and articles on the topic. One example — http://www.jstor.org/pss/2118254. You will need aspirin to go through the articles but your comprehension power will skyrocket if you persevere!

3. Grammar

a) An excellent site for Phrasal Verbs is: http://www.phrasalverbdemon.com/.
e) Check out the page on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_grammar

Interact with other CAT aspirants
Well you are already here! There is no better site in India for clearing your verbal ability doubts thanhttp://www.pagalguy.com/forum/english-resources/.

Testing
There are plenty of websites which allow you to test yourself in short bursts under a timer. At least the two that I know of with a good quality of tests which can be taken on the go are www.complore.com andwww.tenaday.co.in.

General knowledge
1. News Enroll for for global and national newspapers (at least two each) and sign-up for their daily updates. This will keep you informed and up-to date about current events.
2. Views Subscribe to or browse through editorial content of newspapers for analysis and opinion of news —http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/
3. Business GK
Please follow http://www.businessworld.in/businessworld/businessworld/ and http://businesstoday.intoday.in/ and the business pages of your daily newspaper.

The ‘Lonely Planet’ of helpful websites to surf

Visit these websites on a regular basis, preferably in a scheduled manner. Set reminders on your mobile phone. Allot each website a day and remember to scan it on that day.
Suggested Schedule,

Everyday: http://www.pagalguy.com/. Especially the weekend reading digests :) . I find so many students completely unaware of changes in the MBA and business education world. And if you do not know anything about the MBA world which you are supposedly so passionate about — what will you know about the world outside?
Monday: http://totalgadha.com/ (Excellent for CAT preparation oriented articles).
Tuesday: http://www.mbauniverse.com/ (News and press releases related to MBA).
Wednesday: http://testfunda.com/ (Test Prep).
Thursday: http://www.rediff.com/getahead/cat.html (News, test-prep chats, etc).

Anjaana Anjaani ......lengthy beyond need !

Anjaana Anjaani released in October last year(2010) and didn't get the chance to watch this movie till May this year (guess ,it was for my own good).By the way , this movie was way below my expectations , truly disappointing particularly when you are casting someone like Ranbir kapoor who has been going through a marvelous phase of his career and Priyanka Chopra , who can single handedly give a hit movie , together .

This movie goes mainly around two people , Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra ,both of whom have lost the will to live and wand to end their life .They both go to the same bridge to commit suicide but couldn't , so they decide to commit suicide together by attempting various ways but every time they fail .Finally , they set a date to commit suicide and decide to complete any work left incomplete which might be saving them from suicide ,before that date .So ,they decide to fulfill their last wishes and fall in love with each other ,as expected ,during the course .

What's good about the movie is its casting , great work done by both the actors .Apart from that , this movie is quite funny at various moments and full of scenic beauty and glamor (thanks to Priyanka)  and songs are simply awesome .What didn't work for this movie is its time duration ( 155 mins ) and end up like just any other love story, lacking originality in script .Moreover , full of unnecessary emotions at times and becomes monotonous with time.

So, in my view one should only watch this if he/she loves "Love " kinda movies or has a lot of time to kill.
For Me it's a

            6.0 / 10
movie.

"THANK YOU" ........a full timepass movie !

Comedy seems to be the shortcut of giving hits for Bollywood these days ; almost every second movie is comic .Well, what's wrong with that if audience likes it .
"Thank You" released on 8th April,2011 directed by Anees Bazmee is another name to this long list but not just another movie you can afford to miss. From unique casting including Irfan Khan , Bobby Deol ,Akshay Kumar ,Celina Jaitley ,etc to screenplay ,everything is commendable.Story is simple and very straight forward and focused on three husbands(also best friends) who have xtramarital affairs and their wifes(also friends) hire a private detective(akshay kumar) and get to know about this .The real humor lies in the way husbands cover their affairs from their wifes and end up hiring the same detective(akshay kumar ) to know about the man who is helping their wifes .Now,watch the movie to know whether this detective helps the wifes or husbands ? Movie is full of glamor and scenic beauty of Canada(as shown in movie) but a bit disappointing in terms of songs which are dull and non appealing .
Overall, it's a nice watchable movie and really value for money .I will give

7.2 / 10
to this movie .

....28 years and the WAIT is OVER !

INDIAaaaa....INDIAaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

yes ,that's the voice of every Indian across the globe ,no matter where they are , after the thrilling victory of Indian Cricket Team in World Cup 2011 final at Wankhede stadium,Mumbai over their neighboring cricketing nation Sri Lanka. 2nd APRIL ,2011 is the date which made every Indian proud and made it into the History books for ever .It's not a victory of 11 players but entire nation which treats Cricket as their religion and criketers as God.

Just a quick glimpse of the journey of Indian Team through this World Cup :

League Matches -> 6 matches ( 4 wins , 1 lose ,1 tie )
Quarter Final (Vs Australia ) -> Beating 3 time defending world champions .
Semi Final (Vs Pakistan ) -> Beating their biggest rivals convincingly .
Final (Vs Sri Lanka ) -> Beating Lankans by 6 wickets and winning the World Cup.

Individual Performances for India :

Sachin Tendulkar -> 2 centuries and few fifties at crucial stages of matches .
Yuvraj Singh -> 4 MOM awards and Man of the Tournament Award .
Zaheer Khan -> 21 wickets , very economical throughout the tournament .
Mahendra Singh Dhoni -> naam hi kafi hai ,his exceptional calm and cool ,even in the most pressurizing situations ,is what makes him special.

This world cup will also be remembered as ,perhaps , the last world cup in which Sachin played and Won after witnessing 6 World Cups . Sachin is considered as the God of Cricket but it took 21 long years before this God could fulfill his own wish .Nevertheless ,as Sachin says " It's never too late".

Also, this World Cup win has continued the dream run of the charismatic Indian Cricket Team Captain M S Dhoni .He has become the only Wicket keeper Captain to win a world cup .
He has taken Indian Team to No.1 ranking in Tests and ODIs .

At last,I would like to congratulate the Indian Team and the whole Nation for the historic victory of our team.

MY FAVOURITE CARTOONS

We all love cartoons ,though you might not watch them now because you don’t get enough time out of your busy schedule or you might think that cartoons are only meant for children under the age of thirteen ,but I still watch cartoons and really like them .I don’t have any obsession for cartoons now as I used to have some ten years ago but I still enjoy my favourite cartoons with the same charm .Everyday some new cartoon character is introduced but I like my old cartoon characters like Scooby Doo , Mickey Mouse ,Spider Man ,etc,.
Today ,there are so many channels like Cartoon Network, Disney Channel , Nick ,etc, . broadcasting cartoons 24 hours but when I used to watch the cartoons a lot ,there weren’t many such channels .I liked Fox Kids on Star Plus ,having one hour duration showing different cartoons on different days .Moreover , earlier most of the cartoons we had ,were meant to make us laugh but with time ,cartoons have evolved a lot ; nowadays , there are several cartoons like Ben Ten , which focus on serious issues like aliens , warfare ,etc,.
Though I used to like many cartoons but I will mention only my favourite cartoons here . Spider Man is one of the few cartoons whose shows I had hardly missed ; I used to watch it in Fox Kids , as I mentioned it before, in which shows of half an hour were presented and aslo, by that time no Spider Man movie had released. Next is Ghost Busters ; I used to see this cartoon on SONY ,even before the Spider Man and I wonder if this cartoon is still shown on some channel. Another one is Alladin ,which I am sure most of you have seen and still like it .Fantastic Four is another addition to this list; now we have a movie also on the same cartoon characters .Duck Tales is another very fine cartoon in which Scrooge ,main character of the cartoon ,is a miser person and he has three nephews who always keep vexing their uncle by mischievous deeds . Another one is Tale Spin , in which there is a bear Ballu (lead character) who has his own plane and carries cargo for different people .Nowadays , I mostly watch Shinchan ,in which a naughty five year old boy named shinchan talks like a mature person but behaves like an even smaller kid ; shinchan also has a dog named shiro .It’s a pretty nice cartoon : full of humour and cuteness .
That was the list of most of the cartoons I like ,but truly the more I try to remember ,the greater the list becomes ;so,
there is no limit .But , nowadays very few of these cartoons can be found on TV ; most of these are obsolete .

FIFA FEVER !!!

India is not much known for its football fans or for its football team ,but when it’s the time of FIFA World Cup even Indians can’t resist the festive mood which FIFA brings with it.This year FIFA World Cup has been organised in South Africa and during the time I am writing this , semi-finals would be in progress. Though, I am not a big fan of FIFA but still this year’s world cup has been unique and known for quiet a lot of things like new Jabulani football by Adidas which received mixed reactions by the players , Vuvuzelas creating nuisance for many teams and of course ,the controversial decisions given by referees in England and Mexico games ; who knows what is still to come .
Well ,my favourite team is Argentina and hope it will win.Another interesting fact about this year’s world cup is the early exit of the big guns like England (not to mention the blunder made by English Goalkeeper Robert Green), France and defending champion Italy ,even before the Knock out round which is really disappointing .Moreover,South Africa has become the first host country in the history of FIFA World Cup not making even into the second round(KO) of World Cup .Really , this year’s World Cup has been full of interesting facts and figures .

My Favourite TV Shows

Don’t worry guys and guls , I am not going to discuss any of our saas-bahu daily soaps here ; we are all quite aware of what they are up to .We all like some specific TV shows : some like humorous while some may like thriller or horror shows , completely depending on individual’s choice .But there are few TV shows which I think anyone above 16 years of age should see and will definitely like ,until and unless ,that person has decided not to like any TV show. Though ,most of the TV shows I like are English TV shows but I will share few Hindi TV shows in the end as well.
When it comes to humour , I think How I Met Your Mother is the undisputed winner of the race ; this TV show is currently in its 5th season but it has only got better and better every season .Every season comprises of around 22 episodes (some have 24 also) ,each episode has a duration of around 21 minutes and is full of laughter .Characters like Barney and Lily are the souls of this TV show ,without which this show could never have been so successful. Another TV show called Big Bang Theory is so cool that any science student or geek would soon become its fan .I have seen only ten episodes of this show but amazingly I have already become its diehard fan .One more humorous TV show I would like to share is Two and A Half Men but I would rate it way below the other two TV shows.
Anyone who likes thriller movies or TV shows , don’t miss Prison Break even for your best of the thrilling movies ; a movie ends nearly in two hours but this TV show has four seasons of nonstop thriller and in between you will never feel bored because of its impressive storyline .This show has already ended but its fans has only increased since the day it first premiered on FOX TV .Another very impressive TV show is LOST ; this show is unique in the way its story has been written because every episode come up with something new in it and you cannot manage to miss even a single episode before you move to the next one .If you miss one episode and watching the next episode of the series , don’t be surprised to find any new character or story seems to be passing over your head .
Now ,it’s the turn of our poor Indian TV shows ; poor because even the quality shows like Indian Idol , Kaun Banega Crorepati , India’s Got Talent ,etc, are losing their charm because of over-crowding of shows in which some saas aur bahu makes use of diabolic tricks to get the desired result. Nevertheless , there are some shows currently running on different channels which is maintaining the image of Indian daily soaps : Indian Idol 5 is currently running on SONY TV. SAB TV is one of the very few channels which runs only humorous shows ,though they have very light humour but they at least don’t frustrate you .Recently , Indian shows have more diverted towards the realty shows like Sach Ka Samna ; this show was a matter of discussion in parliament too . Finally , I can say that even though, currently we don’t have much to applaud about our small screen shows but its future seems to be great .

METRO TRAIN …..lifeline for Delhites !

“I have to hurry ,will talk to you later.” ,that’s a common thing to hear these days .Everyone is so busy these days that it’s somewhat difficult to tell who is more busy : a rickshaw puller or a doctor , they both rush with equal intensity when it comes to their job. In this fast moving world , everyone wants to be ahead of others and they rush for their destinations with full force .This scenario is worst in big cities like Mumbai ,New Delhi ,etc, where daily work of so many big corporations ultimately reflect on the whole economy of the country and an efficient means of transport affects the business activities of a city to a great extent .Speaking particularly about New Delhi , transport system was at the mercy of Blue line and DTC buses before the introduction of Metro Train ; no doubt ,public is still not satisfied with the way bus service has been managed over the years and even with the future plans of bus services as proposed by the government.
Metro Train was undoubtedly the biggest gift given by the Delhi Government to its daily commuters in the year 2002 when it first ran from Shahadra to Rithala and it was just a beginning of a bigger dream of making Delhi a world class city as far as transport facilities are concerned. Thousands of passengers used to travel using this single Metro line daily ; no. of passengers increasing every day. Later , Metro spread its wings by starting many new Metro lines over the years reaching almost every corner of the city and taking the load off the buses and also off the commuters ; latest Metro line being from Inderlok to Mundka.Presently,Metro ferries lakhs of commuters daily which shows how successfully it has been running .
Not only Metro provides a faster mode of transport but also a far better comfort level as compared to the buses which always run jam packed which makes it difficult to use in summers ,while fully air conditioned Metro is the first choice of the commuters in summers .Another advantage of using Metro is its high frequency which minimizes the waiting time and let the people reach their respective destinations on time . Besides these advantages , the biggest plus point which Metro has is that it ensures the safety of its passengers which has been a major concern recently .In buses , we have to daily buy the ticket and creates the problems if you don’t have change ;while using Metro ,you don’t need to buy the ticket daily : just get a Smart Card from the customer care centre ,with recharges of the multiples of Rs.50 , it has become much easier to travel by Metro .
Delhi Metro has proved to be a boon for the daily commuters comforting them in every possible way and reaching the world class level in terms of its services ; recently opened line of Metro from Inderlok to Mundka is running on standard gauge ,which is accepted as a standard all over the world ,while all other existing metro lines are broad gauge . In short , we can say that Metro is a lifeline for the Delhites !

IPL …. Cricket at its Best !!

Started on the theme of EPL (English Premier League) ,IPL (Indian Premier League) has already proved its success with its popularity and viewership increasing every year at a steep rate . In India , people go crazy about cricket and when it comes to IPL ,there is no stopping them .With its T20 format , it’s no exaggeration to say that it is ruling all other formats of cricket even when it’s not recognised by the ICC.

IPL started in the year 2008 with a bang ; people watching it all over the world in large number , no doubt it was super hit . It comprises of 8 teams ,namely : Delhi Daredevils , Mumbai Indians , Kolkata Knight Riders , Chennai Super Kings , Kings XI Punjab , Rajasthan Royals , Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers . Each team has its franchisee(s) ,who in other words the BOSS of the team ; franchisee(s) decides which player to purchase during the auction and which player to play in final XI out of the purchased players , but it’s a mandatory that every team can play only four foreign players ; rest will be Indian players.

Every team has an official home ground and plays total 14 matches before semis ; 2 matches against every other seven teams in which seven are played on its home ground and other seven on opposition’s home grounds. Then , top four teams make into the semis and then ,two to the finals. In the first edition of IPL ,Rajasthan Royals was considered to be the weakest team and guess what, it won the IPL edition one ; that’s the beauty of cricket , isn’t it ?

Some people might think that IPL is ruining the future of Test and ODI Cricket , but they are ignoring the other perspective that introduction of IPL , based on T20 format , has made the Test and ODI cricket even more interesting ; batsmen are looking for scoring at a much higher strike rate , bowlers have discovered some new weapons against batsmen like slower bouncer ,etc,. So ,IPL is good for the future of cricket. After the success of 1st and 2nd edition of IPL, 3rd edition is running currently and no doubt , it’s proving more successful than the last two editions .

Not only, IPL is entertaining the people all over the world ,but also serving the cricket like a loyal servant . With two new teams being added in the 4th edition , IPL will be trying to overshadow the craze of its master ,EPL.

ClixSense -- Now earn by just surfing the web pages

...hmm ! U might surf for hours in a day but now sumultaneously get paid for that also . What u have to do is to make a account using the following link and register urself by providing necessary information and start earning .

MAKE UR ACCOUNT NOW AND ENJOY !!!

YOUR CELL PHONE - 5 Things u might never knew

-->EMERGENCY

The emergency no. worldwide for mobile is 112. if u find urself out of the coverage area of ur mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency no. for u and interestingly ,this no. 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.TRY IT OUT.

-->Have u locked ur keys in the car ?

Does ur car have remote keyless entry ? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone : If u lock ur keys in the car and the spare keys are at home ,call someone at home on their cell phone from ur cellphone. Hold ur cell phone about a foot from ur car door and have the person at ur home press the unlock button ,holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock and saves someone from having to drive ur keys to you.Distance is no matter ,you could be hundreds of miles away, and if u can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for ur car, u can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

-->Hidden battery power !

Imagine ur cell battery is very low.To activate ,press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve battery and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery .This reserve will get charged when u charge ur cell phone next time .

-->How to disable a STOLEN cell phone ?

To check ur cell phone's serial number ,press the following digits on ur cell phone : *#06# . A 15-digit code will appear on the screen . This no. is unique to ur handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe .If unfortunately ur phone gets stolen , u can call ur service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block ur handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card ,ur cell will be totally useless .You probably won't get ur phone back ,but at least u know that whomsoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everyone does this, there would be no point in stealing the cell phones.

-->Free Directory Service for Cells

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle ,which makes this situation even more of a problem .When u need to use the 411 information option ,simply dial : (800)FREE411 ,OR (800)373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into ur cell phone now.

http://www.mGinger.com/signup.html?inviteId=2616444

if u join mginger using this url i will be paid 4 every sms u recieve ,isn’t it amazing but the worst part is that we can order the money only when we earn atleast 300 rupees and i have never recieved more than 2 sms a day so it will take some time before u get anything in ur pocket but remember u r paid just 4 recieving sms which is not a big deal and also u can delete ur account whenever u want so at least u can give it a TRY !
